Local government is the third level of government in Australia. It allows voters to elect councillors who will make decisions on matters that affect everyone who lives and works in the local area.
The three levels of government in Australia allow voters to engage in their democratic right to vote for people who will represent them in government. Some commentators claim Australia is over-governed, but despite this, Australians hold on tightly to their right to elect their government members, some of whom become their prime ministers, premiers, chief ministers or mayors.
